CARHARTT
Fernanda Dekkers Podolan
Overview
Carhartt, Inc., is a U.S.-based clothing company founded in 1889 that focuses on work clothes. It is still a family-owned company, owned by the descendants of company founder Hamilton Carhartt, with its headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan.
In the United States, Carhartt is known for its work clothes, such as jackets, coats, overalls, coveralls, vests, shirts, jeans, dungarees and fire resistant clothing.
Carhartt was originally founded in Detroit, MI. to make work clothing for railroad workers. Their initial growth throughout the 1890s was focused on railroad workers’ need for durable and long lasting work overalls.
Over time, Carhartt clothing items evolved trademark features intended to further extend durability, including the use of heavy duty threads, reinforcing rivets at vital stress points, and a variety of durable, high technology materials resistant to flames, abrasion and water. Today, Carhartt clothing is commonly found on construction sites, farms and ranches, among other job sites.
Due to competition from other apparel manufacturers and pressure to drive down prices, many of Carhartt’s non-core apparel items have been increasingly outsourced abroad. Some countries where outsourcing is and has been done are: Honduras, Guatemala, Dominican Republic, China, and the Philippines. Carhartt EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) was formed in 2006 to provide workwear to the European mark.
Scrolling down you'll find the journal of what Carhartt have been doing since September 2013 until now, January 2014.

Carhartt WIP Radio App 2.0
On 17th September 2013, Apple released its new iOS 7 operating system with the vision to “take an experience people love and make it better”. As Carhartt WIP have similar intentions, they had overhauled their Carhartt WIP Radio App ready for iOS 7 with an all new and improved design.
It now provides easier access to background information, artist biographies and track listings as well as displaying the artwork of the currently playing show on the lock screen. Furthermore, the new notification mechanism will now inform the user when each show goes live each month.
For those who are still using iOS 6, there’s no need to worry, the Carhartt WIP Radio App runs perfectly on both operating systems.

Carhartt WIP x Antiz
Since the first collaboration in 2007, Antiz Skateboards and Carhartt WIP have built up a close working relationship, sharing the road, team skaters and of course the thing that brought them back together in the first place, skateboarding. To celebrate their tenth anniversary, Carhartt WIP have once again teamed up with Antiz to produce a collection based on the Antiz hobo style of travelling.
On 3rd October 2013, the collaboration has been designed by another old friend of Carhartt Work In Progress, renowned artist and graphic designer Veenom.
Pro skaters on Carhartt WIP and Antiz Skateboards:
- Hugo Liard (France)
- Julian Furones (Spain)
- Gabriel Engelke (Sweden)
Antiz Skateboards:
Antiz Skateboards was founded in 2002 by Carhartt skaters Hugo Liard and Julian Dykmans, photographer Loic Benoit and Julien Bachelier. Skateboarder owned and run, there has never been much doubt about what this brand represents. More than a decade of low-budget touring has resulted in four great videos (especially last year’s absolutely amazing anthology “X Years”) and a very well-deserved spot as one of Europe’s most recognisable skateboard companies.
Veenom:
Illustrator Veenom grew up in Montpellier and currently works in Paris where he is a co-owner of Bleu Noir Tattoo Art Shop. His imagery, based on “erotic dreams and B-movie nightmares” explores everything from 50’s pinups to 80’s punk rock album covers.
The tour video screening + slideshow took place in Lyon (10.10.2013) and Paris (26.10.2013).

FASHION FIGURE INC. x CARHARTT WIP: Multifaceted artist Reginald Jolley, better known as Reggieknow had fun this season recreating a selection of Carhartt WIP products in a micro-scale cosmos for Fall/Winter 2013.

A.P.C. + CARHARTT
It’s a symbiosis, much more than a simple collaboration, it’s the last capsule collection to be created by A.P.C. and CARHARTT.
The style of the two brands and the creative minds of Jean Touitou and Arnaud Faeh combined perfectly to form a collection of simple, detailed products, due to land in stores on 18th October 2013.
The International Preview Launch took place in both Tokyo and Paris.
The A.P.C. + Carhartt collaboration represents a symbiosis of two brands and the two individuals at their helm, Arnaud Faeh at Carhartt and Jean Touitou of A.P.C. The collection was never the construct of a marketing team, no less accountants, instead it is the wholly creative endeavour borne out of the desire to create unique and desirable product.
Featuring reworked Carhartt favourites in quintessentially A.P.C. fabrics, the capsule also includes sentimental elements and witty design touches. A blueprint of Jean Touitou’s boat features as a print on T-Shirts and also on the reverse side of a watch. That watch is called “If Six was Nine”, a nod to the Jimi Hendrix song of the same name and the fact that the numbers have been switched on the watch face- wearers might need their sea legs for that one as well.
The capsule has been launched in Carhartt WIP and A.P.C. stores, online and in a selection of multi-brand stores worldwide.
